Hästens and Cristian Zuzunaga present: The Pixel Bed

The master bed maker, Hästens, has collaborated with innovative designer Cristian Zuzunaga to create a bespoke bed, combining traditional craftsmanship with a contemporary and eye-catching pixel design.

Hästens, together with Zuzunaga, teamed up with Wallpaper* to create the ‘Pixel Bed’ for the forthcoming ‘Handmade’ issue. Published in July, the ambitious project exclusively features products created entirely for the leading design magazine. After several creative collaborations and receiving the prestigious Wallpaper* 2010 Design Award for Best Bed, Hästens is excited to support the project in celebration of original and bespoke design.

The stunning Pixel bed was unveiled by the designer at the Hästens UK Concept Store on the King's Road on July 8th. Brent Cooper Hästens sleep expert and owner of the King's Road showroom, said: “Cristian's Pixel Bed is unique and is a wonderful example of how cutting-edge design can be combined with traditional craftsmanship to make an exquisite piece of furniture. We were delighted to have the opportunity to welcome Cristian and host the UK unveiling of the bed at out King's Road showroom.”

A textile and graphic designer by trade, Zuzunaga is recognized for his brightly multi-coloured and distinctive pixelated textile prints in a checked pattern. A natural partnership was formed with the designer due to the similarity of Hästens’ iconic and instantly recognisable blue and white checked upholstery. Zuzunaga visited the Hästens HQ in Sweden earlier in the year to develop the fabric alongside the team of dedicated bed craftsmen to ensure the outstanding comfort and performance which Hästens is famous for.

Cristian Zuzunaga is a Spanish born designer focusing on interior design by working with printed textiles. His fresh and colourful designs are versatile, recognisable and unique, and have allowed him to collaborate with well-established companies such as Moroso, Kvadrat, Ligne Roset and Belmacz. His inspiration comes from architecture and from experiencing the urban environment through global cities. His work is mainly based on square and rectangular shapes, on abstraction and essence. It deals with gravity, randomness, repetition, time and space.
